'Spider-Man' Catches Audiences In Its Web

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Spider-Man continues to spin his box-office web.
The franchise reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man, with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, which opened on Tuesday, finished first at the box office on its first weekend of release, earning an estimated $66 million and pushing its six-day total over the $140 million mark.
Last weekend's box-office leader, Ted, the Mark Wahlberg comedy, was a strong second with $36 million.
The animated holdover, Brave, was third with $24 million.
Fourth went to director Oliver Stone's new drug-war thriller, Savages, with a debut total of $17 million.
And Magic Mike rounded out the top five with $15 million.
As for the weekend's third new mainstream title, the concert documentary, Katy Perry: Part of Me, it took in $7 million, good for eighth place.
Overall, industry-wide totals were pretty much as expected and in line with the weekends following Independence Day over the last two years.
