Tesla Motors Applies To Sell, Service Cars In Michigan
PALO ALTO (CBS/AP) -- Tesla Motors has applied for licenses to sell and service its vehicles in Michigan.
The Palo Alto, California-based electric car maker submitted applications in November to Michigan's Secretary of State office and recently submitted follow-up information.
Secretary of state spokesman Fred Woodhams says the department is reviewing applications to sell new and used cars and a decision is expected "in the next month or two."
Tesla says Monday it's "committed to being able to serve its customers in Michigan and is working with the legislature to accomplish that."
Gov. Rick Snyder in 2014 signed a law clarifying that automakers can only sell through franchised dealers.
The move was criticized by Tesla, which sells directly to customers and says Michigan law is "very harmful to consumers."
