NBA G League player Terry Roberts shot in Philadelphia over the weekend
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - An NBA G League player was injured after a shooting outside a nightclub in Philadelphia over the weekend.
Police said Long Island Nets guard Terry Roberts was shot by a stray bullet outside 5th Street Lounge in Olney around 12:45 a.m. Sunday.
"We're grateful that we still have our son," Terrence Roberts, his father, said.
His parents are breathing a huge sigh of relief and are by their son's side.
"He's feeling upset that all of this happened," his father said. "He's also optimistic and he feels lucky."
Roberts was visiting Philadelphia with another teammate early Sunday. They decided to go to the 5th Street Lounge when police said shots were fired and Roberts was hit in the chest.
"As soon as they got there and was walking toward the place, just seems like gunfire just erupted that they just so happened to be walking into," Terrence Roberts said.
His parents said their son was in critical condition at Einstein Medical Center but will survive. He's even able to speak.
"He's a miracle. I'm just going to tell you that," Allison Roberts said. "The doctors themselves said that he is a miracle."
Terry Roberts joined the Long Island Nets, the G League affiliate of the Brooklyn Nets, last October. He's averaging 7.2 points and 2.9 assists in 19 games for Long Island this season.
Even though he's disappointed he won't be on the basketball court soon, his parents say his love of the game will keep him pulling through it faster.
"He's just worked hard. Preserved," Allison Roberts said. "He's just a wonderful person."
The Long Island Nets said in a statement to CBS New York, "Terry Roberts was the victim of a crime on Sunday morning in Philadelphia, and we are in the process of gathering more information about the incident. He is currently in stable condition, and he is expected to make a full recovery. Our thoughts are with him and family at this time. Due to the ongoing law enforcement investigation, we will have no further comment."
Police said no arrests have been made and investigators have not recovered a weapon.
