Temple University Plans To Raise Tuition By $1,200
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Temple University announced Friday that it will raise tuition by about $1,200 per student this fall to make up for deep cuts in state education aid, though it's probable student protests likely helped to lessen the blow to the state's education budget.
University President Ann Weaver Hart thanked students for their support in fighting Governor Tom Corbett's original plan to cut funding to state-aided universities by 50 percent:
"In the last four months, you sent more than 10,000 letters and emails to the Governor and the members of the General Assembly."
Now Temple - as well Penn State, Lincoln and the University of Pittsburgh- will only see a 19 percent decrease in state aid. Hart says Temple will make a number of accommodations to help cope with the cuts.
"Our plans call for us to to reduce Temple's operating costs and we will focus with energy and committment on increasing revenues."
Hart says Temple will also set aside an additional $6.8 million in financial aid for students.
