Temple University Hosts Regional Confab To Build US Entrepreneurship

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The White House is hosting seven forums throughout the country today to talk about how government can work with the private sector to lift the nation's economy.

One of those forums was being held in Philadelphia, at Temple University.

The main theme was that entrepreneurs build the economy.   Lawmakers from Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Delaware, along with small business leaders, held a roundtable discussion on how to encourage entrepreneurship and create more jobs.

"What we notice in Delaware -- and I think all states around -- it's really about access to capital," observed Delaware state treasurer Chip Flowers (second from left in photo).  "At the end of the day, you could have the best idea in the world, but if you don't have a nickel to your name to get it to market, guess what?  It's not happening."

Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter (far left in photo) told those assembled at Temple's Fox School of Business that businesses and government need to work together.

"We need to hear your thoughts and your ideas, the things that we need to do more of, the things that we should stop doing," he said.  "And if you think we need to just get out of the way, you can tell us that as well.  Because you're the ones who are really going to help turn this city around, our region around, and our country around."
