Temple University Evacuating Students From Japan Campus

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Temple University is taking steps to evacuate students from its Temple University Japan location.

The main campus, in Tokyo, is working with International SOS to arrange a chartered flight to Hong Kong for sometime on Saturday or Sunday.

Local Temple officials were meeting to firm up details on the evacuation. The cost of the flight to Hong Kong will be covered by Temple University.  In addition, Temple will make available financial assistance for flights from Hong Kong to a final destination.

The Temple University Japan campus is composed of an international university and the "Study Abroad" program (see related story). Forty percent of the university population is from the United States. Twenty-four students in the Study Abroad program are Temple students.

Classes at the Japan campus are postponed until March 28th.  Some American staff -- including the dean -- plan to stay in Japan.
