Temple University Braces For Possible Cuts, Freezes Hiring

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Temple University has instituted salary and hiring freezes in anticipation of possible deep cutbacks in state funding.

University President Ann Weaver Hart announced Friday that the Philadelphia institution would also be restricting travel and delaying searches for five new deans.

The moves come following Governor Tom Corbett's proposed 50 percent cuts to higher education. He says the reductions are needed to close a multibillion-dollar budget deficit, but lawmakers have not yet approved his plan.

The funding loss would affect 14 state-owned and four state-related universities, including Penn State and Temple. Penn State announced a salary freeze in March.
Administrators and thousands of students from the 18 schools have been demonstrating to protest the potential cutbacks, which could lead to higher tuition.
