Temple Launches Effort To Crack Down On Underage, Off-Campus Drinking
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Temple University launched an effort this weekend to reduce off-campus partying and underage drinking. The goal is to ensure the safety of students and address the quality-of-life issues for residents in the surrounding neighborhoods.
From Thursday through Saturday nights, there are increased security patrols off campus and a community support team that works with police to report rowdy parties with excessive drinking and highly intoxicated students.
"We have heard from our neighbors," said Stephanie Ives, Dean of Students. "They have been very clear about their concerns about our students partying in the neighborhood."
Ives would like to see a dramatic reduction in the most serious alcohol-related violations.
"Assaults and vandalism and disorderly conduct and hospital transports," she said. "If those all went down I would be very, very happy because that's really what is putting health and safety at risk and what is most disruptive and dangerous to the community."
The university has jurisdiction over off campus housing and students can be suspended or expelled. And a third violation carries a fine of $1,000.
