State Trooper Released From Hospital After Shooting; Teen Charged As Adult

PHILADELPHIA (CBS/AP) — A 17-year-old has been charged in connection with a chaotic Philadelphia traffic stop that ended with a state trooper shot and a school bus engulfed in flames.

Giovanni Cotto is charged as an adult with attempted murder, risking a catastrophe and other felonies Police say Cotto was in a car stopped for an expired registration Tuesday morning and traded gunfire with police during a chase that ended when his car hit a bus and both burst into flames.

Trooper Patrick Casey, 31, was shot in the shoulder. He was released from Hahnemann Hospital late Wednesday morning,

The teen's father, Hector Cotto, says his son is "a good kid" who "made a wrong decision."

He says "no matter what happened, I'm going to be there for my son."

Authorities say Cotto is being held on $3 million bail.

Police say they continue to search for Kaymer Lewis, who was a passenger in the vehicle stopped by troopers prior to the shooting on I-676.

Police say though there are no charges pending against Lewis related to the shooting, they are interested in speaking to him regarding information that he may be able to provide relevant to the investigation.
