PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Ted knocked 'em dead.
Ted, director Seth MacFarlane's (of "Family Guy") debuting R-rated fantasy-comedy about a grownup and his anything-goes teddy bear, starring Mark Wahlberg, finished first at the box office with a robust estimated opening-weekend total of $52 million.
Second place was claimed by Magic Mike, the new male-stripper dramedy with Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey. It took in a strong $45 million in its debut.
Last weekend's leader, the animated adventure, Brave, took third with another $34 million.
Fourth was the new Tyler Perry comedy, Madea's Witness Protection, with a respectable total of $25 million.
And the weekend's fourth new mainstream title, the drama People Like Us, with Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks, earned a modest $4 million, still good enough for a tenth-place finish.
