Taxi Driver Leads Police On Chase In South Philadelphia; Charged With DUI
PHILADELPHIA (CBS/AP) -- Police say a drunken taxi driver led them on a chase and crashed through a fence after cursing at an officer who found him asleep at the wheel in South Philadelphia.
Police say the sleeping driver fled around 1:30 a.m. Monday after the officer, thinking he'd suffered a medical emergency, broke one of the taxi's windows.
Authorities say the driver went the wrong way on a street near Penn's Landing and crossed the Platt Bridge twice before crashing through a fence and into a guardrail and losing a tire near the Delaware River.
Police say the cab driver then jumped out of the taxi and tried to flee on foot, but was quickly apprehended as he ran toward the river. He was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital where he was treated for a minor head injury.
Police didn't immediately release the driver's name. He is facing several charges, including DUI.
