Tax Deadline Extended to April 18th In 2011
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Good news for procrastinators: you have a few extra days this coming year to work on your federal tax return.
April 15th is the normal tax deadline, but in 2011 it's a holiday in Washington, DC ("Emancipation Day"), so we all get some extra time this coming year to complete our returns.
"Emancipation Day falls on April 16th," explains IRS spokesman Mark Hanson. "Since that's a Saturday, the holiday will be observed on April 15th. With April 15th being a holiday and a Friday, the next business day will be Monday, April 18th -- and that's when federal tax returns are due."
Emancipation Day marks President Lincoln's freeing 3,100 slaves in DC in 1862.
And because of the federal extension, state tax returns for New Jersey and Pennsylvania are also due on April 18th.
