Sweet Sugar Cane Exhibit At Seaport Museum

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Eat your vegetables - let's have some candy! Well, sugar is a vegetable to begin with; sugar cane grows as a grass, or sugar comes from sweet beets. And you can learn all about sugar, its origins, and Philadelphia's long history of candy-making at the Independence Seaport Museum's 'Oh Sugar!' exhibit.

This Saturday, December 14th, you can watch in wonder as the Berley Brothers, of Franklin Fountain fame, demonstrate how they make those fabulous old-fashioned clear toy candies by pouring hot sugar syrup into original molds, from 3 to 5 pm at the Museum. Then stick around as you lick a candy treat and watch the lighted boat parade on the Delaware River at 5 pm.

If you miss Saturday's festivities, you can still find the clear toy candies at Shane Confectionary through the holidays, and take in the 'Oh Sugar!' exhibit at the Seaport Museum all the way through Valentine's Day.

Even if you don't care much about gardening, it's fun to remind yourself when you see such magical candy creations that sugar starts out as a plant!
