South Jersey Town Welcomes Piece Of 9/11 History
SWEDESBORO, N.J. (CBS) -- A South Jersey community plans to erect a memorial to those who died in the 9-11 attacks 15 years ago.
The town of Swedesboro took possession of a piece of the wreckage from the subway below the toppled World Trade Center that will be the focal point of the memorial.
Two rusted pieces of subway rail were brought down from New York. They will serve as a constant reminder not only of the victims, but those who rushed to ground zero to help.
"There's no words to express," said Tony DiFebbo, one of those who volunteered to go to New York on that fateful day. He was on hand as the materials arrived at the Swedesboro Fire House. "You get choked up. What are you going to do?"
Neighboring Woolwich Township set up a memorial last year, which gave Swedesboro Council President Sam Casella the idea to put one in his town.
"We will build a memorial in front of Borough Hall that will represent 9/11 and the patriots that live not only in these communities we serve, but throughout the entire country," Casella said.
Hopes are to have the memorial in place in time for this year's anniversary.
