Suspects Steal $14K From Elderly Man In Bensalem
BENSALEM, Pa. (CBS) – Police are searching for at least two suspects accused of convincing an elderly male to withdraw large amounts of money then stealing it from him.
"We see this all too often," Fred Harran of Bensalem Police said.
On Friday, Sept. 5th around 12:45, police in Bensalem responded to the area of the Dunkin Donuts at 3401 Street Road to investigate a theft.
They say the victim, a male from Northeast Philadelphia, was allegedly approached by two black males with African accents while at a Wawa located at Bluegrass Road and Grant Avenue in Philadelphia.
Harran says the elderly Russian man, who speaks little English, was approached by two men who offered to give him $20,000 if he first handed them $14,000.
The suspects convinced the victim to drive them to two banks in Northeast Philadelphia and the PARX Casino, where they say the man was forced to withdrawal money by means of a cash advance on his credit card.
Once the victim had withdrawn the money, he then drove the suspects to the Dunkin Donuts, and while parked in the lot there, the men stole the envelopes containing the cash.
"Go to the casino and max out his credit card in a cash withdrawl and he got back to the car. They then said they were thirsty and they stopped at Dunkin Donuts, at which time they grabbed his money and took off," Harran said.
The suspects fled in a white newer-style minivan with the victim's approximately $14,000.
The driver of the van, described as a middle-aged black male, is also a suspect in the investigation.
The suspects were last seen near the Hampton Inn on Street Road.
Harran says, as always, if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
"Nobody makes a $6,000 profit by giving someone $14,000. That's ludicrous," Harran said.
Anyone with information is asked to call police.
