Suspect Shot By Police Following Traffic Stop In Juniata
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A police officer opened fire on a suspect who was acting suspiciously following a traffic stop in Northeast Philadelphia early Tuesday morning.
The incident happened in the 700 block of Ramona Avenue in the Juniata section of the city.
According to investigators, the incident began when an officer spotted a BMW driving down the street on one of its rims.
Police say the officer attempted to stop the driver, but he initially ignored the order but later pulled into a parking lot.
The officer then ran the tags of the car and it came up as being stolen. The officer then tried to get the suspect out of the car, but investigators say the suspect began acting suspiciously and attempted to flee.
Police say the officer told the suspect to stop and raise his hands, but the suspect refused to do so. The officer opened fire, shooting the suspect twice in the stomach.
The suspect was taken to Temple University Hospital in an unknown condition.
The officer was not injured.
So far, investigators say they did not find a weapon in the suspect's car.
The incident remains under investigation.
