TRAINER, Pa. (CBS) - A truck plows into a home, killing one person and leaving police to search for the driver.
It all unfolded shortly after 7 o'clock Friday evening in the 4300 block of West 9th Street in Trainer, Delaware County.
Police tell us three people were in the truck's path. Two managed to jump out of the way, the third, an elderly man, could not and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Michele Merdian, the victim's neighbor said, "It's terrible, he's an awesome guy. He's a very nice person. This is sad, very sad."
Shocked and saddened, residents of Parkview Mobile Home Park Homes remain in disbelief after learning one of their neighbors in his 70s, a Vietnam War veteran, was killed in the crash.
Trainer Police Chief Fran Priscopo explained, "There was a call for a pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle. Once the officers got here they learned that the victim was lodged under the trailer and the driver of the vehicle had fled."
According to neighbors and police confirm, 46-year-old Ed Shaw was behind the wheel of the utility truck. Neighbors tell us Shaw has been living and working at the mobile home community as a maintenance worker for about the last three years.
Merdian added, "He shouldn't have been in that truck for one thing. That was positioned to do some work tomorrow and he got in the truck and like they said, they heard the motor revving and a big crash."
Police tell us on their end, the motive behind the crash remains under investigation. We're told, Shaw was taken into custody not long after police arrived.
"He actually surrendered to us about three streets over in the 1500 block of Huddle Avenue," Chief Priscopo said.
Late Friday night, some neighbors suggested alcohol may have been a factor. They added the crash stemmed from an argument and unfortunately, the victim was not involved in that argument.
Police could not confirm that information on Friday night. They say their investigation is continuing and charges against Shaw are pending.
Investigators say until the victim's family is notified, they are withholding his name.
