Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor Gets Award From Philadelphia Bar Assn.
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - US Supreme Court justice Sonia Sotomayor was in Philadelphia today to speak to a Philadelphia Bar Association luncheon and get an award.
Sotomayor received the Philadelphia Bar Association's "Diversity Award," which will be renamed in her honor.
At a question-and-answer session with the Bar Association's luncheon guests, Justice Sotomayor said the most pressing diversity issue today is inequality in education.
"Until we solve the structural problems that make an equal education available in public and private institutions... we will not be able to reach diversity in society," she told the gathering of almost 1,000 people.
Justice Sotomayor almost swayed the crowd completely.
"I'd love for a rematch between the Yankees and the Phillies," she said to a chorus of laughter -- which quickly turned to catcalls when she showed her non-judicial bias. "It doesn't matter what they do," she said of the Phillies, "we're still going to beat you."
