Summer Program Encourages Interns To Stay In Philadelphia After Graduation
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A new summer program for college interns is geared towards encouraging them to choose Philadelphia as a place to live and work after graduation.
Deborah Diamond, president of Campus Philly, explains this is the first year of their new program, called My Philly Summer, "We went to some regional employers who had some robust summer internship programs and we said we want to offer your summer interns some great fun experiences after work. We want to introduce them to some great people and we want to introduce them to each other."
My Philly Summer is a series of networking opportunities. Interns even got to rub elbows with Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, "And it's all a part of our promotion to encourage college students and college graduates to stay in Philadelphia, enjoy all that we have to offer, get a job here and help continue to make Philadelphia a great and lively city."
Why is it so important to retain college grads?
"CEOs for cities calculated that if Philadelphia raised its college attainment rate by 1%, the economic impact would be 4.4 billion dollars -- and that's because college graduates earn more money, they rely less on social services and they employ other people."
