Sugar Cane Festival In North Philadelphia On Saturday
NORTH PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Saturday is the annual Sugar Cane Festival in East North Philadelphia.
The annual Sugar Cane Festival is the official start of summer for the Latino community in Philadelphia. It honors the historical significance of the sugar cane crop for generations of Puerto Ricans, Philadelphia's largest Latino Community.
Nilda Ruiz, President and CEO of Asociacion Puertorriquenos en Marcha (APM), which hosts the event, says it is a grand combination of history, sustainability, fun, and fitness.
"We do have a station where we have lots of sugar cane and we make the actual sugar cane juice the way they make it in Puerto Rico. But we have a healthmobile, they'll be health screenings, our housing counselors are there," Ruiz said.
The festival is Saturday from noon to 5pm on North Fifth Street, between Norris and Berks Streets.
