Study: Teen Enthusiasm For Facebook Dwindling, Twitter Usage Up Significantly

By Chelsea Karnash

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A new Pew Research Center study shows that while social media usage is up for teens, their enthusiasm for Facebook is dwindling.

The study, which surveyed 802 teens about their social media habits, revealed that the majority of teens on Facebook are fed up with excessive sharing, "drama," the stress that comes with the need to "manage their reputation" and an increasing adult presence on Facebook. But most said they maintain their accounts because "participation" is an important part of teenage socializing.

Of those who have Facebook accounts, 60% reported keeping their profiles private and 74% said they've deleted or blocked "friends" before.

The average teen Facebook user had 300 friends, and 7 in 10 said they are friends with their parents.

Another interesting tidbit: Teenage use of social media site Twitter is significantly up from 2011. Twenty-four-percent of teens reported using the network, versus just 16% in 2011.
