Study Suggests Drinking Coffee May Be Good For Your Eyes
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Need another reason to pour that second cup of joe? You're in luck.
A new study suggests that an ingredient in coffee can help prevent deteriorating vision.
The study is published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry and it says that chlorogenic acid, or CGA, is a strong antioxidant that has been shown to prevent retinal degeneration, at least in mice.
The study states that raw coffee is four to 12 percent CGA.
In their experiment, researchers treated mice with nitric oxide, which creates oxidative stress and leads to retinal degeneration, but first they pretreated some mice with CGA.
Researchers believe the CGA prevented retinal degeneration in the pretreated mice.
While researchers stress that these are positive results, the effects of coffee consumption on eye health are not yet completely clear.
However, this study isn't the first to suggest health benefits to drinking coffee.
Previous research suggests that green tea and coffee may help lower your risk of having a stroke, especially when both are a regular part of your diet.
