Study: Binge Drinking Increases Risk Of Heart Attack & Stroke
By Dr. Brian McDonough
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Problems caused by heavy drinking may linger well after the hangover has come and gone.
Binge drinking is a major problem on college campuses and certainly the short term effects can be devastating. But there can be serious long term effects, according to a new study.
Research suggests that frequent binge drinking alters circulation in the same way that heart disease risk factors like high blood pressure and high cholesterol do. It can lead to heart disease later down the road. Binge drinking alters the cells that control blood flow.
That can be a precursor for blood vessel damage and hardening of the arteries, increasing risk for heart attack and stroke.
