Students Get Hands On Aviation And Engineering Experience

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Nearly 70 students including 15 girls working quietly in pairs in Prince George's County, Maryland, who appeared to be doing an art project, were instead in a special program, encouraging them to embrace the study of science and technology,
Aerospace Engineering and Aviation Technology is exposing them to career opportunities; but rather than explain why algebra is needed in 9th grade, they get hands-on experiences in building gliders and, as seniors, work with mentors at NASA.
The County has opened 36 career-focused academies and is increasing the number, offering career options to 3400 students.
Engaging activities like attending an air controllers convention and hearing members of the Tuskegee Airmen, a black World War II unit, have motivated them to look at this program as a career builder.
