Students Around The Region Participate In 7th Annual Sea Perch Challenge

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Local school kids participated in an engineering competition at Drexel University.
Area middle and high school students from Philadelphia, the surrounding suburbs and South Jersey spent their Saturday at Drexel University competing in the seventh annual Sea Perch Challenge.
Joanne Ferroni, Director of University and Community Partnerships, says each team spent 13 weeks building an underwater robot.
"They're going through two challenges. They're doing a maneuvering challenge and a salvage challenge."
Eighth grader Carly Miller of Lacey Township middle school says the program has been a great introduction to the engineering field.
"I learned stuff I didn't know about. I learned how to solder and how to build a remote."
And the challenge wasn't easy.
"Teams are given a kit and they're only allowed to spend $20 and they're allowed to use anything you find in a recycle bin," says Ferroni.
Over 600 students participated in all.
