Student Saves Man Who Fell On Subway Tracks As Train Approached

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It was a close call for a Septa rider on Friday, who fell on to the Broad Street subway tracks, just as a train was coming. He suffered no injuries, thanks to quick action by a Temple student.

21-year-old Marketing major Rich Montgomery was leaving the City Hall station about noon when out of the corner of his eye, he saw papers flying. "Could someone have fallen," he thought, so he went back.

"And there's a guy in between the rails so he's kind of hidden and at the same time I hear the train is coming around the corner," Montgomery said.

Then, Montgomery reached out to him. "But he's not getting up. I think he was in shock. It was like a 6 foot fall," the Temple student recalled.

So he frantically waved at the train.

"I hear the brakes start to go and I see that as my opportunity, I can maybe save the guy," Montgomery said.

So, he jumped onto the tracks and lifted him to other riders up on the platform and safety.

Septa says they're not sure why the man fell but he declined medical treatment. And though they're grateful to Montgomery, they don't recommend such heroics.

For Montgomery though -- "I don't think I could have done anything else. There's was no way I was going to stand in front of that guy and watch that happen.
