Structured Games Make Recess More Fun For Students And Teachers
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A school in West Philadelphia is offering structured playground games for children during recess.
When kids are let out for recess at Charles Drew elementary school, Ben Gibboney, program coordinator of Playworks Philadelphia, meets the kids out on the playground where he sets up structured games for those who want to participate.
Anindita Kundu, 9, seems to like the playworks program.
"You have to work together like a team," she said.
Principal Huie Douglas III says since Playworks was brought in six months ago, students have acquired better problem solving skills.
So, what are the differences when the kids play on their own and when they have a structured play period? "Less fights," Douglas III said.
Anindita says since Coach Ben has taught them different games, it's much more interesting to play out on the vast blacktop area.
"Spud, fruit basket, cookie monster, and switch," are some of her favorites.
