Stretch Of City Avenue Named To Honor Legendary Philly Newsman

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Ed Bradley Way! That's the new name of a stretch of City Avenue between Presidential Boulevard and Monument Road to honor the legendary newsman and native Philadelphian.

Ed Bradley was born in Philadelphia in 1941. He was best known for his work on CBS' 60 minutes. He died nine years ago.

Bradley started his career as a reporter for WDAS radio in Philadelphia in 1963. He was the first African-American to cover the White House.

Patricia Blanchet, holding a street sign bearing her late husbands' name, was all smiles.

"You know, he was never a big man in his own head and for his hometown to recognize him with something that is permanent in this way, that tons of people will see riding down City Avenue will have a lot of meaning for him," says Blanchet. "I think he would be astounded and surprised and really pleased.

The iconic broadcast journalist for nearly 40 years racked up 21 Emmys and countless of other prestigious awards.
