Streets Empty, Most Businesses Closed For Sandy In Manayunk
By Kim Glovas
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Main Street in Manayunk is prone to flooding even after a heavy rain, so this storm has all but closed the busy area.
Main Street is empty, with just a few people walking around, and almost every businesses is closed, dark and has sand bags piled up outside the door to keep potential floodwaters out.
The Cactus Grill, though, is open. Leo is the shift manager, and he says this restaurant is actually the highest point on Main Street.
"We've been through a lot of these storms, We barely, really, get flooded at all. I mean, I don't think we even have any record of being flooded here, because of our location on the street," he says.
Meanwhile, Sumner popped into the CVS for some last minute supplies. He says this storm is totally different from Irene.
"The last big storm, right after Irene, probably two weeks after that -- we had a rainstorm that came through, and Shurs Lane got flooded, there was about two feet of water in the street. And that was about the last time I've seen it look like this here, where it's just kind of a ghost town downtown."
Last year's flooding may have served as a warning, and now residents and businesses are taking this storm very seriously.
