PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- As folks get into giving spirit this holiday, they may find that there is less cash to go around. One local expert say that creative giving could be the answer.
Unemployment and economic uncertainty has even most generous individuals a little wary about parting with extra cash. But University of Pennsylvania Professor and volunteerism expert Fermida Handy says giving time is a great way to donate:
"Cook a meal at the Ronald McDonald House for the people that live there. There are many places where you can come in just for a few hours."
Handy says if you are looking for a way to give back get creative. Go online and find something you're interested in.
"You can go to an old age home, meals on wheels, there are as many opportunities as there's as many possibilities as there is imagination."
Handy says donating use books, clothes or organizing a food drive for your local shelter are great ways to give when you can't write a check.
