Storm Makes Dangerous Mess Of Area Roads And Traffic

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The storm hit late Sunday morning , and it hit surprisingly hard. Conditions across the area were treacherous.
Nick Tagliavia was making the dangerous trip from Delaware to a family holiday celebration back home to Manayunk -- by way of I-95.
"It's an absolute mess," he tells KYW Newsradio. "I mean, you can't see anything. Visibility is poor. Cars obviously aren't performing like they should. Drivers are terrible. Everybody doesn't know how to brake."
Nick adds he saw almost a dozen accidents while driving.
Ed Reilly also suffered from a long day of traveling.
"I'm trying to get to the airport," he says. "I spent all day trying to get there, trying to go back home to L.A. I came from Palmyra, New Jersey and it was rough the entire way."
During the worst of the storm, sections of I-95 were a sheet of ice and visibility was down to just yards. Drivers all throughout the area were losing patience, tractor-trailers were getting nowhere and countless people were wishing they were anywhere but on the road.
"It all of a sudden, just, bam, hit us and I'm slipping and sliding," this driver tells CBS3 Eyewitness News.
Fortunately, she was okay and grateful for the state police who came to her rescue, but by all accounts, from South Jersey and across the bridge in Philadelphia, it was a mess out there.
And for road crews, the work is far from over.
Drivers are advised to leave early Monday morning, and bring with them plenty of patience.
