State Sen. Vincent Hughes Backs Wolf's Nominee to Head Pa. State Police

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- A prominent state senator from Philadelphia has come out in support of Marcus Brown, Governor Wolf's embattled nominee to be state police commissioner.
The latest incident involving acting state police commissioner Marcus Brown involves reports that he received an anonymous, racist letter with a threatening tone.
Today, state senator Vincent Hughes (D-Phila.) said that letter underscores concerns he has that state police have regressed in terms of African-American representation in their ranks.
Hughes says Brown, who is white, has a track record of success on diversity issues.
"He is totally opposite -– totally opposite -– what was represented in that letter that was delivered to his home," Hughes said today.
Earlier this week, the state troopers' association called on the governor to recall Brown's nomination, citing a number of issues including a flap over Brown removing roadside signs critical of his decision to wear the state troopers' uniform even though he did not come up through the ranks.
