State Officials Unveil Plans To Invest In New Rental Housing For Sandy Victims

EGG HARBOR Twp., N.J., (CBS) - State housing officials came to South Jersey Thursday to trumpet plans to invest in new rental housing for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.
State officials were in Egg Harbor Township to unveil plans for more than 2,200 rental housing units to be created for low and moderate income people affected by the storm. Some $135 million in federal dollars and tax credits will help fund the projects in nine New Jersey counties, including Atlantic, Ocean, and Cape May.
They chose the Clarion Hotel and Convention Center on the Black Horse Pike because it's among the first projects to take off.
West Trenton developer Ron Rukenstein is behind the more than $10 million project.
"We're going to be replacing the roof that was damaged. We're going to be adding new heating and cooling systems that are more energy efficient. But the biggest thing is going to be taking multiple hotel rooms and combining them to create 84 one, and two, and three-bedroom apartments," said Rukenstein.
The developer says he's hoping to begin work November 1st and have the building ready within a year.
