SPCA: 5 Dead Dogs Found; 2 Emaciated Pit Bulls Rescued In Kensington
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The Pennsylvania SPCA is investigating two disturbing cases of animal abuse tonight.
They involve a total of seven dogs, five of them were found dead in Kensington.
SPCA officers are used to seeing the worst of the worst when it comes to these animal cruelty cases, and these cases are certainly no exception. But they come on the heels of an exciting event for the SPCA this weekend, Mega Match-a-Thon is in full swing.
Lexington is a pit-bull mix. She's extremely emaciated, weighing 30 pounds -- half of what she should weigh. SPCA officers found her and another dog living in squalor in the basement of a home in the 2100 block of Cambria Street in Kensington.
"Feces all over the floor, urine all over the floor, no food, no potable water," Rebecca Glen-Dinwoodie of the SPCA said.
This case of animal abuse isn't the only case the SPCA is dealing with right now. On Thursday night, the remains of five deceased dogs were found either in garbage bags or piles along this wall at Martha and Monument Streets in Kensington. No ID's, no way of knowing who they belonged to or how long ago they died.
"Our hearts always go out to these animals and what's really important is not only that we find those responsible, but also we remember that they're wonderful people out there and they're the ones who come in and adopt," Glen-Dinwoodie said.
"It's so sad, it really is. It's horrible. I don't know how anybody could do that," pet owner Andrea Palumbo said.
While the SPCA is dealing with these heartbreaking cases, there is a bright side on weekends like this. Mega Match-a-Thon is underway and it's packed with those who cherish pets and want to give them a good home.
"What I like to see and what I do here is someone like Lexi, filling out, building her confidence, and we'll see her soon at one of these events," Linda Torelli of the SPCA said.
SPCA officers right now are nursing Lexington and Hudson, the other dog that was found in that basement, back to health, trying to get them back to events like this where they can be adopted.
The SPCA is hoping to adopt out as many as 250 animals during the adoption event this weekend.
