South Philadelphia Man Indicted In Mob-Related Slaying
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A South Philadelphia man has been indicted Monday in what may be the city's first mob slaying in a decade.
Forty-two-year-old Anthony Nicodemo has been in custody since neighbor Gino DiPietro was gunned down outside his home in December.
Prosecutors have not commented on a motive, and skipped a preliminary hearing to send the case to a grand jury.
The 50-year-old DiPietro was killed the same day federal prosecutors wrapped up their racketeering case against reputed mob boss Joseph "Uncle Joe" Ligambi and six others.
A Ligambi prosecutor had handled DiPietro's 2008 drug case. And Nicodemo's name came up on wiretaps played at the trial.
But it's not yet clear the slaying has any link to the Ligambi case.
Nicodemo's defense lawyer did not immediately return a call for comment about the murder charge.
