South Jersey Town Basks In Glow of a 'Rookie of the Year' Award
By David Madden
MILLVILLE, N.J. (CBS) -- The town of Millville is beaming with pride over the selection of native son Mike Trout as the American League Rookie of the Year (see related story).
But Trout himself seems to be taking things in stride.
Trout may be a Los Angeles Angel in the outfield, but in Cumberland County he's just a guy who likes to hunt, fish, and eat a half-dozen hamburgers at a time.
And he thinks this award puts Millville on the map, so to speak.
"I'm from a small town, as you can see, going out there and proving some people wrong. The east coast can go out there and play as well," he said today.
Some are talking Trout up as a league MVP, and he'd love to get that award. But right now, he says, he wants to be with friends and family.
That's fine with his parents, Jeff and Debbie, who insist their son doesn't behave like a celebrity.
(Debbie Trout:) "I still have to pick up after him."
(Jeff Trout:) "His mother keeps him grounded."
Mike had grown up a Phillies fan but says he's quite happy with the Angels organization that drafted him four years ago.
