South Jersey Man Pleads Guilty To Violent 2011 Carjacking

By Tim Jimenez

TABERNACLE, NJ (CBS) -- A Burlington County man pleaded guilty to the violent carjacking of a 77-year-old woman last year.

It was last June, in a food store parking lot in Tabernacle, Burlington County. The county prosecutor's office says 36-year-old Roy Patterson of Shamong admitted to slamming a 77-year-old woman's face to the ground and taking her car.

This unfolded after Patterson said he took car keys from another man in an unsuccessful carjacking attempt. All of this was done, he later admitted, so that he could drive to Camden to buy drugs.

Within the hour, Patterson crashed into a light pole in Camden County and tried to flee on foot.

Patterson pleaded guilty to carjacking and robbery. Under the plea agreement, he could spend up to 25 years in state prison, but he may be eligible for parole when he's in his late 50s.
