South Jersey Man Charged With 1985 Murder
CAPE MAY, NJ (CBS) – Detectives have charged a man currently incarcerated in New Jersey with a 1985 cold case murder.
William Tozer, 53, who is already time in East Jersey State Prison, was charged with the 1985 murder of 57-year-old Carl Robinson.
On Dec. 9, 1985, detectives responded to Dennisville Road in Dennis Township, NJ for reports of a body discovered inside a burned residence.
The body was later determined to be Carl Robinson's, and the cause of the fire was deemed arson.
During the investigation that followed, detectives learned that Tozer had served a 2-and-a-half year prison sentence at Bordentown State Prison for assaulting and robbing Robinson.
Over the next few years, detectives zeroed in on Tozer but never had enough evidence to charge him.
In 2012, the case was reopened, and authorities were able to charge Tozer.
The murder is believed to have occurred because Robinson provided testimony in an unrelated incident that had resulted in Tozer's incarceration.
Tozer is currently serving a 99-year sentence for an unrelated murder.
