South Jersey Democrats Working On Cory Booker's Senate Campaign

DEPTFORD, N.J. (CBS) - With less than two months to mount a statewide primary campaign, the race to replace Frank Lautenberg in the U.S. Senate will likely come down to those with the best organization, particularly on the Democratic side of the ballot. Newark Mayor Cory Booker now has a group of some five dozen party officials in South Jersey working for him.
The list covers elected officials and candidates from Burlington to Cape May and is topped by the state's top Democrat, Senate President Steve Sweeney, who recognizes Booker has three opponents in the mid-August primary.
"I wish them all well but no one comes close to Cory when it's about getting things done," Sweeney said.
That extends to the hope of many here to retain control of the legislature in Trenton, maybe even strengthen it. Booker promises to be there for them in November.
"We're just a few votes away from overriding the Governor's veto on marriage equality," notes Booker. "And so any organization that I can build up in the next two months is going help up in future elections."
Booker admits he's employing many of the tactics President Obama used in his two campaigns to create a strong, grass roots network of support.
