Son-In-Law Of Governor Corbett Fired From Philadelphia Police Department
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The son-in-law of Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett has been fired from the Philadelphia police force after he allegedly stole marked money during a police sting.
Officer Gerold Gibson, who has not been criminally charged, turned in his badge to Internal Affairs Friday morning.
"He absolutely did not steal the money. He's completely innocent of these charges and they know it," Gibson's attorney Richard DiSipio told CBSPhilly Friday morning as he and Gibson walked into the Internal Affairs building.
The Police Internal Affairs Bureau and the FBI allegedly caught the 17-year police veteran in a "sting," taking $145 in marked money from what he thought was a drug suspect's car. (See Related Story)
Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey say his department ordered the investigation into Gibson, who works for the Narcotics Unit, after Gibson's fellow officers alerted them to their suspicions that he was removing money and other items from crime scenes.
Shortly after the allegations came to light in early February, Governor Corbett released a statement that read:
"I was surprised and concerned to learn about the allegations regarding my son-in-law Gerold Gibson. Susan and I continue to give our family our love and support."
