Some Philadelphia Area Catholic Schools Get Reprieve From Closure

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The official word comes tomorrow on which Catholic schools in the Philadelphia area will close at the end of this school year.  But several elementary schools are already saying they've won their appeals and will stay open.

The Holy Trinity Parish in Morrisville, Pa. reports on its web site that its parish school will remain open.  St. Laurentius in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia, St. Francis de Sales School in Aston, Pa., and St. Mark School in Bristol, Pa. also reportedly won their appeals.

A blue-ribbon panel last month recommended the closure of 45 elementary schools and four high schools in the Philadelphia archdiocese (see list), as a way to stem declining enrollment and rising costs (see previous story).

Two dozen of the schools appealed the recommendations in recent weeks (see related story).
