Snow Storm Packs Quite A Punch
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - An early-season major winter storm dumped over a foot of snow on Philadelphia and more than 19 inches on some parts of the Garden State.
Residents in and around the region woke up Monday morning to a heavy blanket of snow. The snow came to an end early Monday, but the major problem will be strong winds.
When all said and done, the city of Philadelphia received 12.4 inches of the white stuff. A snow emergency remains in effect and city officials said trash and recycling pick-up is cancelled for Monday.
The season's first snow storm also impacted Sunday's scheduled Eagles game against the Minnesota Vikings. The game has been postponed until Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. It is the first time that an NFL game will be played on a Tuesday since 1946.
The state of New Jersey was hit hardest by the major snow storm. Cape May received 18 inches of snow while Atlantic City got 19 inches. The small town of Dennisville in Cape May County received a whopping 26.5 inches.
Here is a small sample of snow fall amounts from around the region: Mt. Holly, New Jersey: 12.5 inches. Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania: 11.3 and outside the CBS 3 SkyDeck, there was 11.5 inches.
While the storm has moved out of the region, strong winds will be a problem all day Monday. Gusts of 45 mph are possible.
The storm and snow will become a distant memory as the temperature for New Year's Day could reach 50 degrees.
