Snow Gridlock Doubles Travel Time For Drivers
MOUNT LAUREL, N.J., (CBS) -- A state of emergency is in effect for all of New Jersey (See Related Story).
Right now, snow plows are criss-crossing South Jersey roads until they hit blacktop.
The New Jersey turnpike itself, off of Exit 4 in Mount Laurel, Burlington County is quiet Tuesday night.
These truck drivers are taking a breather finally after hours of driving all day.
"From door to door? A thousand miles," this driver from Florida said.
He made a pit stop in Mount Laurel, and if you can believe it, they had plenty of company.
"I just decided to make a trek, try to beat the storm but I guess I'm in the middle of it now," Chris Salem said.
He is traveling home from Washington, D.C. to Connecticut. Rachel Atherley from Philadelphia to Hudson Valley, New York.
"Three hours," Atherley said.
(Reporter:) "Today what's it looking like?"
"At least six I would say," she said.
Their travel time easily doubled, but for work they say driving in this mess was a must.
Expressways looked more like parking lots, a disabled car pushed by good Samaritans and another driver getting help from our own "Eyewitness News" videographer, an off-duty Camden County officer and more.
For those who had to be out for work, it wasn't pretty, but most took it in stride.
"You want to go home, bottom line," a driver said.
