Smoltz, Experts Agree On Dangers Of Playing Just One Sport
By KYW Medical Editor Dr. Brian McDonough
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- During his Hall of Fame induction speech on Sunday, former Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz made a comment that's gotten a great deal of attention in medical circles.
It had to do with young athletes and participation in one sport. It's been a trend that young athletes are told to play one sport throughout the year.
In his speech, Smoltz talked about Tommy John surgery, the increasing surgery in 14, 15, and 16-year-olds. And he said it's a result of overuse.
His recommendation was that kids play multiple sports.
The reason it's gaining attention is simply, it's very true. Many children now at a very important age and stage of development are overusing particular muscles, whether the sport they play is soccer, baseball, or tennis.
What he and experts are suggesting is that multiple sports are better for a young athletes, not only for the fun and experience, but to prevent injuries in the short term and the long run.
