Smoking Ban in Effect at Salem County Community College

There's a growing trend toward an outright ban on all public smoking in larger facilities. Like Salem Community College, where a total prohibition on lighting up goes into effect today.

KYW's David Madden reports the Carney's Point campus becomes the 11th county community college in New Jersey to impose a complete smoking ban joining Camden, Burlington and Gloucester around here.

Salem President Dr. Peter Contini says the new policy follows more than a year of consultation with students, faculty and staff:

"We assume the first month or so of the implementation will be as much an education and hopefully, then, good cooperation."

Smoking cessation clinics will be offered to anyone who wants them. Once that grace period ends fines will be $25 and $75 for violators.

How broad is the ban? You can't even smoke in your own car, if it's parked on campus.
