'Smart' Homes On The Rise As Price Of Technology Becomes Affordable
By Ian Bush
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Home technology is getting 'smarter' -- so much so, in fact that you barely have to lift a finger to control everything from your thermostat to your blinds.
Creating a smart home will cost you, but Paul Sandquist, the chief operating officer of HiFi House in Broomall says it's not as much as you might think.
"The price for doing this has come down so dramatically with some of these other systems that are now available -- a lot of people are doing it in retrofit."
With radio frequency devices largely freeing you from cords, the wireless trend goes a step further, adds Sandquist.
"Cameras are a big thing now, too -- you can see the interior or exterior of your home anywhere in the world from your iPhone. Not only can you check to see if your lights are on or off and what the temperature is in your house, you can control it from them."
Sandquist foresees more intelligent appliances, where everything from your AC to the fridge will be plugged in to the Internet.
