Sleep Could Prevent Heart Disease
By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Researchers in the Netherlands recommend you get your sleep if you want to prevent heart disease.
Researchers found that sufficient sleep is more than seven hours a night and was linked to more than a 20% reduction in cardiovascular disease and almost a 50% reduction in fatal cardiovascular disease. They say sleep should be added to proper exercise, diet, reduction in alcohol intake, and smoking.
Over a 20-year period, the researchers found that 36% of all forms of cardiovascular disease and 57% of fatal cardiovascular disease could be prevented by watching these five areas.
It all fits together. Past research has shown that lack of sleep has been linked to obesity, hypertension, higher total cholesterol and an increased risk of diabetes.
