Slain Philadelphia Police Officer's Mother Helps Lead Peace Walk Down Broad Street
By Todd Quinones
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It was an emotional Wednesday evening as Officer Moses Walker's mother joined a peace walk down Broad Street in North Philadelphia to protest violence. But her walk cut short, just yards away from where her son was killed.
Officer Walker's mother, Wayne, was overcome with emotion at the mere sight of the spot where her son was gunned down early Saturday morning near 20th and Cecil B. Moore.
She helped lead the march, which was organized by Mothers in Charge, but the pain became unbearable and she was escorted away.
Earlier Wednesday evening marchers urged people in the neighborhood to help police track down the 2nd suspect.
News that one person of interest was in police custody brought only partial relief.
"I'm glad about that, they have one person and I understand that there's two. So, there still looking for another one, " said Dorothy Johnson-Speight of Mothers in Charge.
"We want to see outrage from the community about the lives that are lost to the senseless violence every day in this city," said Johnson-Speight.
For Wayne, her son's murder is especially difficult. She lost another son to gun violence years ago.
"Lighting never strikes twice in the same place and now she finds herself here again, but God gave her the strength to be here today," said one woman.
