SJ Conference Centers On Helping Dyslexic Kids

GLASSBORO, N.J. (CBS) -- A South Jersey high school played host to a regional conference of teachers and administrators dealing with dyslexic students.
Some 170 people, including parents, took part in the second annual meeting sponsored by the Glassboro Public School District.
Cheryl Tartaglione, one of the organizers, tells KYW Newsradio, "I think it was probably more difficult in the past. Now with New Jersey laws, districts are required to provide screenings so that they get help at an earlier age rather than wait till they're falling apart in 4th and 5th grade."
Training is mandatory for elementary school teachers. Topics ranged from handling the basics in dyslexic children to specialization in severe cases.
An expert also discussed the specific challenges of addressing the issue in kids for whom English may be a second language. Hopes are to expand the program next year to enhance reading instruction for dyslexic kids.
