Sixers Do Not Retain Michael Curry, Aaron McKie
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Brett Brown has finished the house cleaning.
The team will not retain Aaron McKie, Michael Curry, or any Sixers coach who served under the previous coach, Doug Collins. Curry was said to be a candidate for the head coaching position, and coached the team during their summer league games in Orlando. Assistant coach Jeff Capel will not be retained either.
"This decision takes nothing away from the talent and loyalty of Michael Curry, Aaron McKie and Jeff Capel, but is more about making a fresh start here in Philadelphia," Brown said. "I respect the way this staff did their job and how they handled themselves with tremendous class and professionalism, which needs to be acknowledged. I am grateful for all the work they've done this off-season leading up to this decision."
Curry is known as a defensive specialist, and is responsible for the success the Sixers defense has had over the last few seasons. The defense was more successful in 2011 than 2012, but the personnel was also much better. Curry did an admirable job given the circumstances.
McKie, a former Temple star, was often time an intermediary between Collins and the players.
Brown said in his introductory press conference that he hopes to have a staff in place by September 1st, but would make a decision on current assistant coaches more quickly.
